The Turner Prize is an annual award for a contemporary artist (usually British) under 50 years of age. It has been organized by the Tate Britain in London since 1984. In 2004, its allocation was £ 40,000. Though associated with conceptual art, the prize is awarded to artists using new media, such as video art, installation and unconventional sculpture, but also to artists.

The appointment is made by public vote in May, and the announcement of the nominees to the number of four is made in July. The exhibition takes place from the end of October to January and the announcement of the winner in December is announced by a jury composed of influential curators and critics and chaired by Sir Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate Gallery.

The event is covered by media coverage and its media success has contributed to the success of the Young British Artists represented mostly by the Saatchi Gallery in the 90s.Most artists became known to the general public and some witnessed their difficulty in the face of sudden media exposure. Prizes for winners' works have generally increased.
