The Last Supper
The Last Supper (Ultima Cena) is a 460 × 880 cm Tempera mural painted from 1495 to 1498 for the refectory of the Dominican convent. Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, which was considered until the middle of the nineteenth century as his masterpiece.
The dining room (Cenacolo) of Santa Maria delle Grazie measures about 460 × 880 cm. Since the time of Leonardo, the floor has been raised and the windows enlarged.
Leonardo represented the Last Supper of Jesus of Nazareth surrounded by his twelve apostles on Holy Thursday, the eve of his crucifixion. There follows an old monastic tradition. Since the Middle Ages the walls of the refectories are illustrated with the Last Supper.
