Sarcophagus of the spouses

The Sarcophagus of Spouses is the name given to the monumental Etruscan burial urns in terracotta, depicting two spouses lying together in the pose of the Etruscan banquet, and whose ashes or buried bodies are contained in the urn.

This type of cinerary urn is in conformity with the Etruscan traditions associated with the worship of their dead: The urn contains a vase and a lid on which is represented in sculpture the deceased in the position of banker, lying on the triclinium and in the pose Of the living, smiling, the left elbow resting (sdraiato) on wineskins, legs wrapped.

The disinterest of realism in the anatomical proportions of the body and legs not respected is typical of the Etruscan aesthetic, which seeks more symbolic aspect in the representation of the characters.
In the Sarcophagus of the Bridegrooms, the first peculiarity rests on its size (that of the Louvre  :
1.11 × 0.69 × 1.94 m), which initially gave it the name sarcophagus.

The second peculiarity rests on the presence of the two spouses together, elongated one against the other, whose ashes are mingled in the urn or of which several urns are gathered, the wife represented pouring the perfume on a hand that he Tends her husband, one of the rituals of the Etruscan funeral.
